Letter To The Editor

To The Editor,

re: The American Debate | Getting white men to jump (editorial published Sunday, October 28, 2007)

The reason I will not vote for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton for President (Democrat Primary) is because, I believe, she is basically a dishonest person. Given a choice between her and a Republican candidate though, I will reluctantly choose her since I also believe the Republican party platform is even more dishonest.

Sincerely,

(Name Withheld)

recipe: Beef and Bean Chimichangas

Ingredients:

1. 1 pound lean ground beef
2. 3/4 cup chopped onion
3. 3/4 cup diced green bell pepper
4. 1 1/2 cups whole kernel corn
5. 2 cups taco sauce
6. 2 teaspoons chili powder
7. 1 teaspoon garlic salt
8. 1 teaspoon ground cumin
9. 1 (16 ounce) can refried beans
10. 8 (12 inch) flour tortillas
11. 1 (16 ounce) package shredded Monterey Jack cheese
12. 1 tablespoon butter, melted
13. shredded lettuce
14. 1 tomato, diced

Cooking Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

2. Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat. Drain excess grease, and add the onion, bell pepper, and corn. Cook for about 5 more minutes, or until vegetables are tender. Stir in the taco sauce, and season with chili powder, garlic salt and cumin, stirring until blended. Cook until heated through, then remove from heat, and set aside.

3. Open the can of beans, and spread a thin layer of beans onto each of the tortillas. Spoon the beef mixture down the center, and then top with as much shredded cheese as you like. Roll up the tortillas, and place them seam-side down onto a baking sheet. Brush the tortillas with melted butter.

4. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden brown. Serve with lettuce and tomato.

Quickpicks: Great Reads

Fiasco, by Thomas E. Ricks. A Washington Post reporter details the incredible series of missteps that led to the war in Iraq, and then to the mismanagement of the occupation. The theme that emerges is the frustrating and astounding failure to learn from mistakes; the same poor management issues crop up over and over again, angering both the Iraqis and seasoned American military men while the top civilians in Washington (and you know who you are) stay the course. At this point, there isn't much new information revealed, but seeing all the details laid out dovetailed chronologically brings home the scale of the fiasco, and the thin likelihood that anyone presently in charge has the skill to turn things around, if indeed anyone could this far down the road. Penguin Press, 2006. - Walt Maguire

The Poetry Home Repair Manual, by Ted Kooser. Ted Kooser was our first Midwestern US Poet Laureate (2004-2006). Listen to him: the adjective is not enemy to the noun, but its servant. Nouns inspire associations, so that one adjective limits the reader's options. Many American poets write in first person and in present tense but Kooser advises otherwise. Watch the ends of your lines, how you go off into space. Cute won't do - meaning is preferable. Pack a lot into your title and concentrate on the poem. Buy this book and use it with a Poetry Handbook by either Babette Deutsch (1982) or Mary Oliver (1994). You'll then have a complete home poetry workshop. Bison Books, 2007. -Jay C. Rochelle

The Species Crown, by Curtis Smith. Smith's novella and collection of short stories has an intimate feel, often as if the narrator is whispering his tale directly into your ear. This effect derives in part from Smith's penchant for using the second person; the direct "you" technique has a way of getting close to the skin and making one squirm, both in pleasure and discomfort, as the stories unfold. At the same time, each piece resonates with dark humor, keen intelligence and startling imagery that will keep you moving from story to story without pause. Press 53, 2007. - Aimee LaBrie

Possible Side Effects, by Augusten Burroughs. Possible Side Effects of reading Augusten Burroughs new paperback with the same title will include uncontrollable laughter and some very embarrassing snorts. Burroughs has once again allowed the general masses into his life and we are thankful. In this montage book, he recalls visiting his grandmothers in the South. His one grandmother teaches him the ways of the tooth fairy, fashionable clothing, and manners while the other teaches him the gentle art of revenge. St. Martin's Press, 2006.- Michelle Whittle

FLEISHER/OLLMAN GALLERY WINTER INVITATIONAL

2007 marks the fifth anniversary of Fleisher/Ollman Gallery's annual Winter invitational of young Philadelphia artists. Curators Claire Iltis, William Pym and Heather Shoemaker seek submissions for this year's installment. The show will open December 14th and run through January 2008.

The young art and gallery landscape has transformed itself many times in the last 5 years, but the F/O Winter Invitational remains an original and a constant: professional, broadly seen and discussed, unbiased, unfazed by hype, gossip or fashion.

Former participants have gone on to show at White Columns, Andrea Rosen Gallery, Scope Miami, Art 36 Basel, the Frieze Art Fair, Moore College of Art, Bellwether Gallery, NADA Art Fair, Harvard University Art Galleries, ICA Philadelphia, and the Fleisher/Ollman Gallery. This is a proven opportunity for young un- and under-represented artists to dramatically raise their profile in the city and international art world at large.

Artists interested in submission must meet the following criteria:

* Must currently reside in the Greater Philadelphia area.
* No official commercial gallery representation in the Greater Philadelphia area.
* All submitted work must have been made in the last 18 months.

Just Trust

When we start to worry and we think we just must,
There is another choice we can make.
We can learn to JUST TRUST.

When we hang on to our fears and deny our tears,
We can try letting go and look for courage within
and JUST TRUST.

When we feel weary and try to control,
There is a motto we might extol:
JUST TRUST.

If we've made a connection to a Higher Power,
There's no need to feel worried or fussed
(unless we want to).
The healthier choice is ours to make.
We can make a decision to JUST TRUST.

Online Action Center
Send Urgent UN mission to Myanmar (Burma)

"Ask President Bush to urge the UN Security Council members, especially the Permanent members like China, to immediately deploy a UN Security Council mission to Myanmar (Burma). This mission should act to resolve the human rights crisis and avert the risk of further violence and bloodshed. The Council should also consider the possibility of imposing an arms embargo and to address the dire human rights situation in Myanmar. The peaceful mass demonstrations taking place compare in scale to those in 1988, when security forces broke up massive pro-democracy demonstrations with deadly violence, killing thousands."

Poetry Plus Excerpt:

Fire and Ice

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

more car culture musings...

vehicle that I have a soft spot for:

The Volkswagon "Thing" (Orange version)

learned how to drive a standard/stick shift one summer at the beach (Port Aransas, Tx.) in this vehicle. At the time, I was 15 yrs old. Also of note, the "Thing" had a standard issue 8-track player plus radio.

souped-up/customized car (an idea from years ago) that is now a "mass produced-type" automobile available in America:

One day will purchase a (previously owned) Le Car and add some wide wheels, hard-core chrome (plus some blue(?) under-chassis lighting) and slowly cruise town hugging the road. Will also have necessities such as small chain(link) steering wheel, lg furry dice hanging from rear-view mirror, and perhaps shag/fuzz on the dashboard. Am sure passersby will murmur to themselves, "Why didn't that guy just buy a 'MINI'?" Also, the Le Car has gotta have/be one of those "convertible" (canvas sun-roof) import versions.

Fun Car(s) with a Nickname:

Will also pickup a (maroon?) AMC Pacer and do the same (low-ride). Will need a three-car garage for the following:

"The Thing"

"Le(low)Car"

"The Bubble"

Honorable Mentions A and B:

"The Gremlin"

"The Pinto"

Bonus Points Question:

Why wasn't the Chevrolet Nova a successful vehicle when introduced to Central and South America?

Answer: "NOVA" translates to "Doesn't Go" in the Spanish/"Latin" language

This is (not) a review of Christoph Büchel’s Training Ground for Democracy at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art

List Of Demands Büchel sent to MASS MoCA director Joe Thompson (excerpted from a seven-page Artist Statement)

patron opinion:

"We should be sensitive to the rights of a visual artist to maintain control over his/her work. However, the way this artist has acted (as I learned from MassMoca’s documentation in the backroom exhibit) is frivolous and unreasonable. As a long-standing supporter of MassMoca, I’m concerned about a situation in which funds that could be used otherwise are being squandered to satisfy the oversized ego of a Swiss artist. I think the museum, as a not-for-profit organization supported in part by donations and membership fees, is correct in soliciting opinions from its membership base in this important matter. I hope that a documentation of these opinions will have additional weight in Court."

Message from the People of God

Let me introduce myself to you, I am Pastor Ayres of Transfiguration Baptist Church located at 38th St. & Fairmount Ave. in West Philadelphia, and these people are some of my sheep.

We are here to introduce you to someone that we think you would love to meet. This person can be anybody you want Him to be; your father, mother, wife, lover, doctor, lawyer or just a friend. Before we meet Him, we were all once in you shoes. We felt as if we had nowhere to go and no one to talk with. We were just wandering from one day to another. Time really had no true meaning to us. But when we met this man, He already knew everything about us. Knowing this, He took us in His arms and welcomed us just like a lost child returning home. This man is Jesus Christ, who was sent to us thru God, His father. He made you a child and joint heir to all His riches. And like a good father, He takes great care of His children. He protects comforts, provides, teaches, nurtures, guides, loves and desires your well being. He has already paid the debt for our sins, so you are now free to worship Christ and get to know Him. If you will let Him, He will do the impossible in your life. He will fill your life with joy, peace and blessings that comes for the Almighty God.

If you would like to get to know Jesus for yourself, please go to your nearest center or Bible-believing church where the Bible is taught as the final authority.

"For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will he withhold from them that walk upright. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee." Psalm 84:11-12

"message" included in bagged lunch (bottle of water, sandwich, chips) given to the homeless

open letter reply:

Dear Sir,

Thank you very much for the sandwich, bag of chips, and bottle of water (Friday, Sept. 14, 9 p.m.). It is very much appreciated.

Also, though not a Christian, I have read many of the "pamplets" given to those living on the street and found your note/message very heartwarming and welcoming. Although scripture says good deeds alone will not get you into heaven/save a person, I think your deeds speak very well of you.

Sincerely,

A Homeless Person

5 recipes:

“We love to tailgate and would love new ideas for hearty sandwiches.”

Take it on the road

Autumn ushers in two of America’s great seasonal rites—football and tailgating. Both require strategy. For the latter, pack delicious, hearty sandwiches of deli meats and salads in chewy breads that won’t fall apart. Prepared, sliced and wrapped ahead of time, these heroes are great on the go and easy to eat. The final touch: cool drinks and plenty of napkins.

(1) Muffuletta Sandwich

Be sure to hollow out the bread so the salad can fit inside. Doing so also cuts carbs and calories.

Olive Salad:
1 cup each pitted green and black olives, coarsely chopped
1 tablespoon tiny capers
1/3 cup diced (1/4 inch) roasted red bell pepper
1⁄4 cup diced (1/4 inch) celery, with leaves
2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley
2 teaspoons finely minced garlic
2 tablespoons red-wine vinegar
2 tablespoons olive oil
Salt and pepper, to taste

Sandwich:

1 round peasant bread (about 7 inches in diameter, 5 inches high), halved crosswise, insides pulled out
4 ounces each thinly sliced Genoa salami and mortadella (found in the deli section)
4 ounces thinly sliced provolone cheese

1. Prepare the Olive Salad ahead of time: Combine all the ingredients and set aside in the refrigerator for 4 hours or longer.

2. Assemble the sandwich: Spread half of the Olive Salad on the bottom half of the bread. Layer with salami, provolone and mortadella, then top with the remaining Olive Salad. Cover with the top of the bread, press down and let stand for 10 to 15 minutes. Wrap the sandwich in plastic wrap and let stand for 1 hour.

3. Unwrap, cut into 6 wedges using a serrated knife, then wrap them for the road.

(2) My Hero

Be sure to drain the salad before adding to the sandwich.

1 French or Italian bread (7 to 8 inches long)
1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons olive oil
8 tender arugula leaves
1 ripe plum tomato, cut into 1/4-inch strips
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
Salt and pepper, to taste
3 slices mozzarella (about 1/8 inch thick)
4 whole fresh basil leaves, rinsed and patted dry
2 thin slices (2 ounces) prosciutto di Parma
4 thin slices (1 ounce) Genoa salami

1. Split the bread lengthwise and pull out some of the insides. Brush the insides of the bread with 2 teaspoons of the olive oil.

2. Make the salad: Toss the arugula and tomato strips in a bowl with the remaining tablespoon of olive oil and the balsamic vinegar. Season with salt and pepper.

3. Layer the bottom of the bread with the mozzarella, basil, prosciutto and salami. Top with the salad. Cover with the top of the bread. Cut the sandwich in half on the diagonal and wrap well for the road.

Serves 1. Per serving: 900 calories, 67g carbohydrate, 43g protein, 50g fat, 90mg cholesterol.

(3) Rich Little Po’ Boy

Broiling the tomatoes adds rich flavor to the sandwich.

3 small ripe tomatoes, halved
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1 Italian bread (12 inches long)
1⁄4 cup mayonnaise
1⁄4 pound thinly sliced rare roast beef
4 thin slices ripe Brie cheese
4 to 6 lettuce leaves, rinsed and patted dry

1. Preheat a grill or broiler; set the rack 3 inches from the heat source.

2. Grill or broil the skin side of the tomatoes until slightly charred (15 minutes on the grill, 8 minutes under the broiler). Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Set aside.

3. Halve the bread lengthwise and pull out some of the insides. Spread the mayonnaise on the bread. Arrange the roast beef evenly over the bottom half and lay the Brie diagonally over the meat. Top with the lettuce.

4. Place the tomatoes on the top half of the bread and mash them slightly with a fork. Invert the top over the bottom half of the sandwich, cut it in half crosswise and wrap well for the road.

Serves 2. Per serving: 580 calories, 35g carbohydrate, 26g protein, 38g fat, 80mg cholesterol.

(4A) Turkey Meatball Grinder

This recipe can easily be cut in half. For convenience, use your favorite tomato sauce.

Turkey Meatballs:
2 pounds ground turkey
1 onion, grated
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon fennel seeds
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 egg, lightly beaten (optional)
2 tablespoons olive oil
About 3 cups of your favorite tomato sauce (for Sheila’s Homemade Tomato Sauce, visit Parade.com)
8 French rolls (each about 5 inches long and 3 inches wide); or 3 Italian breads (about 15 inches long and 3 inches wide), sliced into 3 pieces each, with the insides pulled out

1. Prepare the meatballs: Combine all the ingredients in a bowl. Form into 24 meatballs, about 11⁄2 inches in diameter.

2. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat and cook the meatballs in batches, shaking the pan occasionally, for about 10 to 12 minutes or until browned and cooked through. Add more oil if necessary. Remove the meatballs to a paper towel to drain.

3. Warm the tomato sauce over medium heat in another skillet. Add the meatballs and cook for 10 to 12 minutes, spooning sauce over them.

4. To serve, spoon about 1/4 cup of tomato sauce into each roll, coating well; spoon

3 meatballs into each bread. Wrap the sandwiches in foil for the road.

Serves 8. Per serving (without the egg): 650 calories, 75g carbohydrate, 34g protein, 24g fat, 100mg cholesterol.

(4B) For the Tomato Sauce (Sheila's Homemade):

3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 onion, chopped
1 each red and green bell pepper, cored, seeded, halved and cut into slivers crosswise
2 cloves of garlic, peeled
and slightly bruised
2 cans (28 ounces each)
Italian plum tomatoes, drained (reserving juices) and chopped
2 tablespoons tomato paste
2 teaspoons dried oregano
Pinch sugar
Salt and pepper, to taste
1/4 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley

1. Heat the oil in a large, heavy pot over medium-low heat. Add the
onions, peppers and garlic and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the tomatoes along with 1 cup of the reserved juices, tomato paste, oregano, sugar, salt and pepper.

2. Cook for 25 minutes. Adjust seasonings. Mash the garlic with the
back of a spoon and stir into the sauce. Stir in the parsley and set the sauce aside.

Serves 8. Per serving: 130 calories, 50 calories from fat, 18g carbohydrate, 3g protein, 5g fat, 1g saturated fat.

(5) Easy-As-Pie Tomato Soup
Ladle the hot soup into a thermos if bringing to the game.

4 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
3 cups sliced yellow onions
2 garlic cloves, peeled and minced
½ cup chopped fresh dill, plus dill sprigs for garnish
Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste
2 quarts chicken broth
2 cans (28 ounces each) ripe Italian plum tomatoes, drained
1 teaspoon ground allspice
Pinch of sugar
Grated zest of 1 small orange
1 cup sour cream, for garnish

1. Melt the butter with the olive oil over low heat in a heavy pot. Add the onions and cook, covered, until tender, about 20 minutes. Add the garlic for another 5 minutes.

2. Add half the dill, season with the salt and pepper, and cook, uncovered, for 15 minutes.

3. Add the broth, tomatoes, allspice, and sugar. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 45 minutes. Add the orange zest, remove from the heat and cool slightly.

4. Puree the soup, in batches, in a food processor.

5. Return the soup to the pot, add the remaining dill, and simmer for 5 minutes. Serve immediately; or cool and refrigerate, covered, overnight.

6. Taste and correct the seasoning. Garnish the soup, hot or cold, with a dollop of sour cream and a sprig of dill.

Serves 8 to 10. Per serving: 160 calories, 110 calories from fat, 10g carbohydrate, 2g protein, 13g fat, 4.5g saturated fat, 15mg cholesterol.

Artistic Temperament

The artist at his/her best - wild, passionate, rebellious, and humane - is often too large and truthful a creature for society's taste. The artist at his/her most outlandish - profane, eccentric, even a little mad - is at least as disquieting a figure. In neither case can he/she walk the streets with impunity: his/her grandeur and his/her strangenes make him/her a target. His/Her task is to become a successful eccentric, a strange but wise duck able to venture out of solitary confinement and mingle among society.

"Perhaps other cities are ready to celebrate the artist and will allow you to get away with more of an artistic temperament, but not a place like Pittsburgh." - Marie Nugent-Head

"All Passions exaggerate: it is because they exaggerate that they are passions." - Sebastien-Roch Nicolas De Chamfort

"The artistic temperament is a disease which afflicts amateurs." - G.K. Chesterton

"Art is nature as seen through a temperament." - Jean-Baptise-Camille Corot

I will acquire ways of being in the world that serve my purposes. Not everyone need know that I am perfectly willing to tango naked down Main Street or stick my tongue out at the mayor. I will remain a real eccentric, but at the same time I will grow wise in the ways of the world.

very good letter to the editor:

Vick Forgot 'Cruel'

"In his apology, Michael Vick used the words immature and bad judgment, but never the word cruel. Vick apologized to his bosses and to children, but never to the animals he routinely tortured. Based on this, I guess he really has no respect for animal life.

Given that he had a contract worth $130 million and a bonus of $22 million, we can deduce that Vick did not need the cash. His activities were based purely on a streak of meanness that he has refused to acknowledge.

As disappointed as I am in Vick, I'm even more upset by supporters who rallied to his defense with placards. Have they no idea of the horror that he inflicted on innocent animals? Very sad."

recipes:

Bayou Blackened Catfish Fillets

The sweetness of the fish lends itself beautifully to blackening spice. Shrimp, scallops, or any firm fleshed fish will work great. The cooking time will depend on the thickness of the fillets. The best way to preheat the skillet and the best way to blacken is outside on the grill. Trust me on this one. Heat the pan for at least 10 minutes over high heat. And don’t forget to clean the grill first! You will need:

Ingredients:
1 8-oz catfish fillet per person
vegetable oil
blackening spice (see recipe)

Method:
Preheat a 10-inch cast iron skillet until very hot. Brush each fillet with vegetable oil. Sprinkle some blackening spice evenly over the fish, turn over, and repeat. Place the fillets in the hot skillet, and blacken on each side for six to eight minutes, until the fish is firm. Use a spatula to turn the fish and to remove it from the pan. Plate and serve.

Cajun Blackening Spice

Blackening is a standard cooking technique that depends on two very important factors: A hot cast-iron skillet and a good blackening spice. The skillet sears in the flavor as it chars the spices. The tasting heat of your blend depends on the amounts and types of spices you use. Habanero or chipotle powder will add an extra kick. Here is a basic medium hot blend, although you can substitute a store-bought product if you prefer. You can use this versatile spice blend on just about any grilled fish or meat as well. You will end up with about two ounces of spice blend, which should be kept in a shaker for use or airtight container for longer storage. Feel free to increase the recipe proportionately.

Ingredients:
1 tablespoon paprika
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
½ teaspoon cayenne powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper

Method:
Blend all the ingredients thoroughly. For a finer blend, use a food processor. Catfish in a bag with vegetables, herbs, and beer butter sauce. “En Papillote” is the fancy French term for “baked in paper.” That’s almost exactly what we are going to do, except that we are making our “bag” out of aluminum foil because we’re cooking it on the grill, and paper wouldn’t stand a chance. Preparing fish in this manner creates a wonderfully aromatic, flavorful, and healthy dish. Omit (or add!) butter if you wish. An hour of prep is involved depending on your knife skills, and cooking takes 20-30 minutes depending on the thickness of the fillets. We are preparing four “bags,” one per guest. Serve with your favorite rice dish.

Ingredients:
4 8-ounce catfish fillets
4 cloves garlic, chopped
1 small red onion, cut into thin strips
1 small red pepper, cut into thin strips
1 small yellow pepper, cut into thin strips
4 teaspoons unsalted butter
fresh herbs (thyme, parsley, chives, etc.) coarsely chopped
kosher or sea salt
cracked black pepper
4-ounces lager style beer
4 pieces of aluminum foil, 16 by 20 inches each

Method:
Lay out the aluminum foil. Rub each piece with a little butter. Place the fish on the foil, then top with the remaining ingredients except the beer. Fold in one side then fold the foil around the fish, leaving one side open. Pour in the beer (1 ounce in each bag), close up the foil, and place on a hot grill. The fish should be cooked in about 20 minutes. Remove the bags from the grill and place on a serving dish. Using a fork and a sharp knife, cut open the bags to reveal a juicy, colorful, and aromatic surprise.

Tea Olive
Hole 1

Par 4, 455 Yards

Original Intent:
"A drive that is long and straight ... will be in a favorable position for the second. It is difficult to obtain par figures from any other position."
- Alister Mackenzie, from the first Masters program

Significant Changes:
- Fairway bunker adjusted, 2006
- Trees added to left side of fairway, 2006
- Tee moved back 15-20 yards, 2006

What To Expect:
Players will get the message early that the course will be more difficult this year. It will take a blast of 327 yards to clear the fairway bunker, and the bunker itself was reworked to add a "finger" in the center. Bailing out on the left side is no longer an option with more trees planted in that area.

Pink Dogwood
Hole 2

Par 5, 575 Yards

Original Intent:
"Although this is the longest hole on the course, a well-hit tee shot will take a good run down the fairway as it slopes over the hill. It was one of our guiding principles in building the Augusta National that even our par 5s should be reachable by two excellent shots."
- Bobby Jones, in Sports Illustrated, April 6, 1959

Significant Changes:
- Fairway bunker shifted to right, 1999
- Tee moved back 20-25 yards, 1999

Did It Work?
Nothing has changed. Big hitters can still reach this hole in two shots, and anyone who walks away without birdie feels as if he lost a shot to the field.

Flowering Peach
Hole 3

Par 4, 350 Yards

Original Intent:
"The left hand side of the green is very narrow; whereas the right side is broad. It is easy for anyone to reach the wide portion of the green with their second shot but difficult to reach the narrow end where the pin will usually be placed."
- Alister Mackenzie, from the first Masters program

Significant Change:
- Fairway bunker complex built in 1982

DID IT WORK?:
The bunker rarely comes into play, although Jeff Maggert ran into trouble here in 2003. The shortest par-4 on the course tempts the big hitters to use a driver, but the devilish green is the key on this classic short hole. A well-placed approach is a must here to avoid a three-putt.

Flowering Crabapple
Hole 4

Par 3, 240 Yards

Original Intent:
"The length of this hole can be varied a great deal, depending upon use of the back tee or the rear portion of the forward tee. From the back tee the shot is usually a strong iron or even a 4- or 3-wood."
- Bobby Jones, in Sports Illustrated, April 6, 1959

Significant Change:
- Tee moved back 30-35 yards for 2006

What to Expect:
Lots of gripes from players who will struggle to hit the ball high enough to hold the green. Already the third-hardest hole, historically, the change will force players to re-evaluate what clubs they will carry. More hybrids and 5-woods will be used on this hole.

Magnolia
Hole 5

Par 4, 455 Yards

Original Intent:
"The proper line here is, as closely as possible, past the bunker on the left side of the fairway. It is not necessary to carry this bunker in order to direct the drive into a groove in the fairway on top of the hill. But it is a very comforting safety factor to have sufficient length for the carry should the shot be pulled slightly."
- Bobby Jones, in Sports Illustrated, April 6, 1959

SIGNIFICANT CHANGES:
- Fairway bunkers extended about 80 yards toward the green, 2003
- Tee moved back, 2003

DID IT WORK?
Yes. Players rarely try to carry the bunkers anymore, so they are forced to play to the right, which means a longer shot to a difficult green.

Juniper
Hole 6

Par 3, 180 Yards

Original Intent:

"With the ball stopping either short of this raised area (back plateau) or off to the left of it, it is an extremely difficult job to get the first putt close to the hole."
- Bobby Jones, in Sports Illustrated, April 6, 1959

Significant Change:
- Pond filled in at front of green, 1959

DID IT WORK?

The cosmetic change has had no real effect for tournament play. Putting the tee shot on the proper side of the green is crucial.

Pampas
Hole 7

Par 4, 450 Yards

Original Intent:
"Length is certainly not at a premium here, but the narrow fairway seems to have an added impact because it suddenly confronts the player just when he has become accustomed to the broad expanses of the preceding holes. ... The second shot is normally a steep pitch, often with a wedge, and precise judgment of range is required."
- Bobby Jones, in Sports Illustrated, April 6, 1959

SIGNIFICANT CHANGES:
- Tee moved back 35-40 yards, 2006
- Trees added to both sides of fairway, 2006
- Green rebuilt for possible right- rear pin position, 2006

What to Expect:
This hole will elicit plenty of comments, too. The size of this green demands an approach from a short iron, but shorter hitters could face a very long second shot. With trees added on both sides, finding the fairway off the tee will be a must.

Yellow Jasmine
Hole 8

Par 5, 570 Yards

Original Intent:
"(The green) is completely visible for the third shot and a player who is sufficiently long to get up in two will be able to define the position of the green owing to the size of the surrounding hillock."
- Alister Mackenzie, from the first Masters program

SIGNIFICANT CHANGES
- Tee moved back 15-20 yards and shifted 10 yards to golfer's right, 2002
- Fairway bunker reshaped and nearly doubled in size, 2002

DID IT WORK?
Like No. 2, this hole is still easily reached in two shots. The enlarged fairway bunker punishes wayward drives, but birdie is still expected here by the players.

Carolina Cherry
Hole 9

Par 4, 460 Yards

Original Intent:
"Under normal playing conditions a long drive straight down the middle of the fairway will give the best result, since the ball will reach a reasonably flat area and provide an open shot for at least half the green. The hole opens up more and more as the drive is played to the right, but the distance becomes increasingly longer."
- Bobby Jones, in Sports Illustrated, April 6, 1959

Significant Change:
- Tee moved back 25-30 yards, 2002

DID IT WORK?
This hole still plays true to what Jones envisioned. The approach, if not properly judged, will spin off the false front and leave the golfer with an awkward chip.

Four More For Fun - Mon. Poetry:

What Is He?

What is he?
- A man, of course.
Yes, but what does he do?
- He lives and is a man.
Oh quite! but he must work. He must have a job of some sort.
- Why?
Because obviously he's not one of the leisured classes.
- I don't know. He has lots of leisure. And he makes quite
beautiful chairs. -
There you are then! He's a cabinet maker.
- No no!
Anyhow a carpenter and joiner.
- Not at all.
But you said so.
- What did I say?
That he made chairs, and was a joiner and carpenter.
- I said he made chairs, but I did not say he was a carpenter.
All right then, he's just an amateur.
- Perhaps! Would you say a thrush was a professional flautist,
or just an amateur? -
I'd say it was just a bird.
- And I say he is just a man.
All right! You always did quibble.

Julian Schnabel - Blue Japanese Painting No. 3

Julian Schnabel, Hat Full of Rain, 1996

Image: Julian Schnabel, Untitled (Los Patos del Buen Retiro), 1991, oil, gesso on velvet, 457 x 457 cm

personal note:

While living in Manhattan years ago spotted Schnabel twice, both times at galleries. The first sighting was at a group show being held at Tony Shafrazi Gallery. Schnabel was unshaven, wearing workboots and a sarong. He also had a bandana tied around his neck. Total mix-match. Had a laugh at that (but in a good way).

The second time I saw Schnabel was at Pace gallery where he was giving Francesco Clemente a tour of the "Fox Farm" painting series. Schnabel was very animated and used many sweeping gestures with his arms and hands while explaining/describing the pieces. Clemente was very silent while taking in the artwork just sort of nodding his head.

good writing:

"Swaying on the district line going West along the Thames, a large man with skin greyed through years of smoking covers a great yawn with a large hand softened by white hair. Opposite, three seats along, a female tourist with yoghurty skin, suddenly finds herself letting out a great sigh of tiredness, too. Her mouth opens and before she has time to realise what's happening, her yawn swallows up the sweaty metro air, a nod of communication that she's not aware of. And then I, too, am wide-mouthed, my jaw stretching apart, unlocking a slightly ecstatic feeling I'd rather wasn't public, a fitting end to the silent conversation we've shared. Who followed? I gave up looking, so struck by the battle of the will of the yawn defeating the tired heart of the inner city."

Desiring To Give All

Desiring to give all, to be all gift,
A living giver, then a giver dead,
He gave to friends the liveliness of his head,
Then stretching generosity with thrift,
Pondered if head itself, the clean bare skull,
Might not be saved and deeded to a friend
So that memorial and functional
Might thrive and blend
In an undying fate
As doorstep or as paper-weight.

melon (recipe):

Bruleed Melon and Prosciutto

Melon wrapped with prosciutto is a timeless classic, but steal a cue from Chef Jose Garces (Amada Restaurant) and brule the melon first. The added texture is delectable. Serves four.

>> 1 small cantaloupe, cut into large chunks
>> 6 slices prosciutto
>> Sugar, to coat melon

1) Sprinkle sugar liberally over melon chunks.

2) Use a kitchen torch to carmelize the sugar. If you don’t have a kitchen torch, use the broiler, with the melon resting just beneath the flame. If you have a gas stove, use tongs to hold the melon sugar-side down toward the flame.

3) Slice the prosciutto to sufficiently cover the melon chunks. Top the bruleed melon with prosciutto, and serve immediately.

good writing:

The modus operandi in these poems is fairly consistent: thinly fabulized autobiography meets resonant cultural reference funneled through a provisional form or persona. I'm hardly the first nineteen-year-old to steal from Kafka, Lou Reed or T. S. Eliot - and old Tom, he had it coming. So, no apologies here, no footnotes required. If I had to peg my loyalties anywhere, it would be somewhere on the bleaker corner of John Ashbery's surrealist side, close company with Charles Simic, James Tate, and co., always with an envious eye on Frank O'Hara, that marvelous swimmer. Oh, and Homer, too. Nothing in particular, but I often think it would be nice if someone compared my small poems favorable to Homer. A grad student can dream, can't he?

"Former General Electric CEO Jack Welch's legendary leadership was masterful and dramatic"

"Leadership is the critical piece not the mythical leader - Jack Welch [GE] or Herb Keller [Southwest Airlines]. Those are fewer and farther between these days. This is about walking the talk, being honest and above-board, being human. And on the flipside, having those business results." Mallary Tytel, president of Healthy Workplaces.

personal note from Allan Smithee (editor of Automotive Acne):

What a crock of shit. I know for a fact Jack Welch is just a cheap S.O.B. I watered and maintained his house plants twice a week for 2-3 years (Manhattan residence - Waldorf Astoria) and never once did he or his wife give the housekeeper a X-mas bonus or tip.

belated news: winning dish for the Second Annual PA Preferred Best Chef of Pennsylvania and it Countryside Regional was (1st plate) pan-seared swordfish served on a bed of argula with a pickled poblano/onion dressing. Entree: pan-seared duck breast with a raspberry/anchovy sauce topped with a fried egg yolk and smashed red skin potatoes with truffle oil. Fried sage leaves were the garnish.

very good letter to the editor, Philadephia Daily News (8/1/07):

Barnes is history

Because the Barnes Foundation is an art collection, people overlook its important history: Matisse visited and designed a mural for it.

If any city could appreciate preserving history, you'd think it was Philadelphia. We could move Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell to Washington, making it easier for tourists to see more American History in one place. Maybe it would draw more tourists and money. But it would be just as stupid as moving the Barnes.

even more lies:

Spy chief backs Gonzales

WASHINGTON - President Bush's spy chief sought to defend Attorney General Alberto Gonzales against charges of lying to Congress in a technically worded statement yesterday that hinged on when the government's terror surveillance program got its name.

Senate Judiciary Committee members have questioned whether Gonzales told the truth when he testified last week that a 2004 confrontation between administration officials had not been about the president's secret wiretapping program.

The reason presented for Gonzales' claim: The "Terrorist Surveillance Program" wasn't given that name by the administration until 2006, long after Gonzales' now-famous effort to get then-Attorney General John Ashcroft to endorse it.

That response came from the director of National Intelligence, Mike McConnell, in a letter to Sen. Arlen Specter, a member of the committee.

The citizens of Philadelphia thank you in advance for voting to give our city $0.75 from every $0.99 deposited into the parking meters located in Philadelphia for the express purpose of keeping SEPTA service semi-affordable for customers, i.e., low fares with transfers included.

Sincerely,
