editorial in The Bulletin

letter to the editor (reply)

Dear Sir (Editor),

I think the editorial you published on Wednesday, 25 April 2007, entitled "Times Change, Killers Don't" is way off base.

http://www.thebulletin.us/site/news.cfm?newsid=18257857&BRD=2737&PAG=461&dept_id=576361&rfi=6

Excerpt from said editorial:

"... Or that New York Times editorialists blamed it (death of 45 people aka "Bath School Disaster") on the easy availability of (Andrew) Kehoe's weapon of choice - high explosives - and demanded tougher dynamite-control laws."

I, personally, am glad that currently, in the year 2007, dynamite is *not* readily available thanks to legislation. Perhaps there is (an) analogy to be gleamed, vis-a-vis, the current gun laws and *easy* availability of firearms, specifically handguns, and the high murder rate in our city of Philadelphia, Pa.

Sincerely,

(name deleted)

carbon monoxide vs carbon monoxide

looking at a British (UK duty) pack of cigarettes, noticed their warning labels (see below) are much more emphatic/plain spoken than the warning labels on American packs of cigarettes. witness:

SMOKING KILLS

SMOKERS DIE YOUNGER

links re: weaker warning labels on American cigarettes

"U.S. Cigarette Companies Fail to Warn Foreign Smokers of Tobacco Dangers; Grossly Inadequate Warning Labels on American Cigarette Packs Sold in Developing Countries."

ditto

though a cigarette smoker, find it very interesting.

also, think its comparative to the recent global warming report brouhaha...

"An authoritative international global warming conference lapsed into an unprecedented showdown between scientists and diplomats over authors' concerns that governments were watering down their warnings."

Yesterday, while getting a cup of coffee for myself, asked computer lab supervisor if he would also like a cup of coffee. He replied in the affirmative adding, "could you also empty my cup and clean it?" I said sure but while cleaning his coffee mug I had to laugh at myself. Remember cleaning a glass in college and then pouring myself some wine and drinking it. Tasted very funny plus there were bubbles. Perplexed, someone explained to me that after cleaning a glass with soap and water you had to "rinse" it. *Brilliant*

First time to clean a glass/dish... freshman college year. How strange is that?

More strangeness...

The day after our house burned down, a car dealer delivered a vehicle from out of town that my mother had been wanting. Car dealer said the vehicle was impressive. On the highway into town he had been able to reach a speed of about 100-110 m.p.h. and the drive was still smooth. Though the delivery/timing was very unfortunate, my father decided to let her keep the car. When she drove us around I enjoyed sitting in the back seat even if I was the only passenger. It was very roomy and spacious. The car though, I think, was supposed to have a "driver". Sorta funny that my mom enjoyed driving that beast. Btw, I really did have a "normal" middle-class upbringing.

Silkworm Documentary

Hello Silver Jews friends and 12 Ave South, 372** gang:

Do you remember Silkworm? I'll never forget them. I was emailed by Seth Pomeroy about a new film he's coming out called Couldn't You Wait?: The Story of Silkworm. And I'm posting to this board to tell you all about it. Basically, they need to generate enough buzz about the film to show an audience, so they can raise enough money to finish it.

At the current state of production, Seth and crew are looking to bring in outside financing to finish the film. This is almost impossible without proof of an audience. I'm hoping you could all help the extended Silkworm, Pavement, and Silver Jews family by telling your friends, writing about the band or movie, covering a Silkworm song, or doing whatever to help the scene, like we all did in our small, loosely connected communities before the Internet (when we used things like 1200 baud).

Now is your chance to help us, please: write about the band or the movie in forums/blogs/zines, pass around the video link, tell your friends, cover SKWM songs, force your local record store to stock "Firewater," do whatever you have to do to show the rest of the world just how big Silkworm's audience really is. We're everywhere and we miss the band.

Told in their own words, this film chronicles their seventeen year long career using various live footage and in depth interviews with their labelmates, rock critics, friends, and many other important figures of the "indie rock" scene. It's going to show the universal experience of relentless low budget touring and the harsh realities and minimal rewards of chasing the “rock and roll dream.”

"...stomach so full of pizza grease..."

For up-to-date info, please visit our myspace page. Feel free to add us to your friends list and leave a comment or a story on our SKWM STORIES blog: www.myspace.com/couldntyouwait

Earlier this March, Seth and crew were asked to edit together a trailer to show at the SKWM Tribute Show in Chicago. With less than half of the interviews we needed, we realized it would be close to impossible to represent the finished film in a two minute blurb. Carrying on in the spirit of the SKWM Tribute Show, this 15 minute "extended trailer" celebrates this wonderful band and it's members using interviews shot from both the Chicago and Seattle shoots. We are extremely proud of how it turned out and look forward to crafting these vignettes into the finished version of the film. (If you have any video, articles, or photos you would like to contribute to the film, please contact me here.)

Look for the video on the typical video sharing sites.

Thanks for listening. Mazel Tov!

The Minimalist: Meatloaf Made Meatier By MARK BITTMAN

Recipe: Country Pâté

2 pounds pork shoulder, with some fat, cut into chunks

1 pound veal shoulder or leg, cut into chunks

6 slices good bacon

Salt

5 cloves garlic

1 tablespoon fennel seeds

1 tablespoon whole black peppercorns

1 tablespoon coriander seeds

1 egg

1/2 cup heavy cream.

1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Put half the meat in a food processor and pulse to chop; pieces should be between 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch in diameter. Remove to a bowl.

2. Add remaining meat, half the bacon, a healthy pinch of salt, garlic, remaining spices and egg to food processor and grind to a finer texture. Combine with chopped meat and cream. If you like, make a tiny burger, sauté it and taste, then adjust seasoning.

3. Pack mixture into a 10-by-3-inch terrine or a 9-by-5-inch bread pan or a similar vessel. Cover with remaining bacon. Bake at least an hour, or until mixture is bubbly and juices run clear. Cool on a rack, then refrigerate. Skim fat if you like, slice and serve at room temperature.

Yield: 12 servings.

A Good Appetite: Taking Back a Childhood Favorite By MELISSA CLARK

Recipe: Queso Fresco Quesadillas With Papaya-Avocado Salsa

FOR THE SALSA:

1 cup cubed fresh peeled papaya

1/2 avocado, peeled and cubed

1/4 cup cubed, seeded cucumber

3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro

2 tablespoons finely chopped red onion

2 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice

2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

1/2 teaspoon honey, or to taste

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Freshly ground black pepper

FOR THE QUESADILLAS:

4 6-inch corn tortillas

1/4 pound queso fresco, available in Hispanic markets.

1. Preheat broiler and place broiler rack 4 inches from heat. In a bowl, stir together salsa ingredients. Taste and adjust seasoning, if necessary.

2. Place 2 tortillas on a baking sheet. Crumble cheese over tortillas. Top with remaining tortillas. Broil, flipping once halfway through, until cheese is melted and tortillas are golden, 1 to 2 minutes a side.

3. Quarter quesadillas and top each section with 1 tablespoon salsa. Serve immediately.

Yield: 2 servings.

Recipe: Comté Grilled Cheese With Cornichon Spread

2 tablespoons whole grain mustard

2 tablespoons mayonnaise

2 tablespoons finely chopped cornichons or other pickles

4 slices whole-grain bread

1/4 pound Comté cheese, sliced

2 tablespoons unsalted butter.

1. Whisk together mustard, mayonnaise and cornichons. Spread on 4 slices of bread and divide cheese among bread slices, to make 2 sandwiches.

2. Melt butter in a medium skillet over moderate heat. Cook sandwiches until golden on both sides, 1 to 2 minutes a side, pressing down on sandwiches with spatula. Reduce heat to low and cover; cook until cheese melts completely, about 2 minutes more. Serve hot.

Yield: 2 servings.

Recipe: Salami and Horseradish Cheddar Bagel Sandwich

2 bagels, halved

3 ounces horseradish Cheddar cheese, sliced (or substitute horseradish Cheddar spread)

1/4 pound salami, thinly sliced

1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced.

1. In a toaster oven or in an oven preheated to 500 degrees, toast bagel halves until pale golden. Top each with some cheese and continue toasting until cheese begins to melt.

2. Meanwhile, fry salami slices in a skillet over moderate heat until golden, about 3 minutes. Place salami and red onion on bottom bagel halves. Cover with bagel tops and serve.

Yield: 2 servings.

Today In History:

April 9

1833 - Peterborough, NH opened the first municipally supported public library.

1872 - S.R. Percy of New York City received a patent for dried milk.

1905 - The first aerial ferry bridge went into operation -- in Duluth, Minnesota.

1912 - The Boston Red Sox defeated Harvard 2-0 on this, the day that Fenway Park was opened for the first time. Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, Carlton Fisk, Jim Rice, Roger Clemens, and Babe Ruth played ball at Fenway and faced the ‘Green Monster’, the huge wall in left field. Until the Humane Society ordered him to stop, Ted Williams used to take rifle shots at the many pigeons that flew around the stadium. In 1954, a ball thrown to stop a player from making a double out of a single, hit a pigeon in flight. Allegedly, the bird fell to the ground, got up and then flew away to safer territory. The ball deflected right to the second baseman, who put the tag on the runner.

1928 - Mae West made her glamorous debut on Broadway in the classic production of Diamond Lil.

1940 - Jimmy Dorsey and his orchestra, along with singer Helen O’Connell, recorded Six Lessons from Madame La Zonga for Decca Records.

1947 - Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers announced the purchase of the baseball contract that would bring slugger Jackie Roosevelt Robinson to the Dodgers from Montreal.

1950 - Bob Hope hosted a Star-Spangled Review on NBC-TV. Hope became the highest-paid performer for a single show on TV. The Star-Spangled Review was a musical special.

1953 - Cincinnati baseball officials said that the National League team wanted to be known as the Redlegs and not the Reds. This was understandable, with the McCarthy Hearings bringing to light the alleged infiltration of Communist reds in the United States in government, politics and entertainment.

1962 - President John F. Kennedy opened the Washington Senators’ baseball season by throwing out the first ball at the new D.C. Stadium (later to be known as Robert F. Kennedy Stadium [RFK]). The original Senators had left Washington for Minnesota in 1961. As part of the agreement to allow the Senators to move, an expansion team had to be granted to DC. The expansion Washington Senators moved to Texas and became the Rangers. The owner who moved the expansion team to Texas was Bob Short, a businessman from Minnesota. Short once ran for the Senate in Minnesota.

1965 - TIME magazine featured a cover with the entire Peanuts gang on this day. It was a good day for Charlie Brown.

1965 - Major-league baseball played its first indoor game. President Lyndon B. Johnson attended the opening of the Astrodome in Houston, Texas. The indoor stadium was termed the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’.

1973 - Tommy Aaron became the second native son from Georgia to win the Masters golf title at Augusta. The first Georgian to accomplish the feat was Claude Harmon in 1948.

1977 - The Swedish pop group Abba made its debut at number one on the American pop charts, as Dancing Queen became the most popular record in the U.S.

1985 - Tom Seaver broke a major-league baseball record (held by Walter Johnson) as he started his 15th opening-day game. The Chicago White Sox defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2. With the win, ‘Tom Terrific’ extended his opening day record to 7-1. He had thrown openers for the New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago White Sox.

1988 - Singer Brook Benton died in New York of bacterial meningitis. He was 56. We remember Benton for many hits. Among them: It’s Just a Matter of Time, So Many Ways, Endlessly, Rainy Night in Georgia, and Baby (You’ve Got What It Takes) (w/Dinah Washington).

Apartment to Air 717

A dear friend of mine invited me to a party
at his apartment. I received the little invitation
in the mail and it said, "I've paid off all my airplane
parking tickets, I don't have to go to court, come on over."
It seemed right to bring red wine, so I did.

After all the invites arrived we had a drink and danced
for awhile. Our host, without drinking, struck impatience
after the fourth song. I asked, "what, you don't like Kitty Wells?"
He said, "let's go!" We boarded the Yellow Plane, one of his
party planes, for an hour ride. He let me sit up front and pretend
to be the co-pilot saying, "imagine you're in one of those
mid-seventies Goodyear tire commercials, you know, like
a bright curve into neon with sound on a T.V. screen."

I allowed myself to steal one of the captains smokes, the one's
with the white filters. I told him I had to go pee. He said,
"well, just go out the window, I'm not gonna open the sunroof
at six-hundred and fifty miles per hour."

The five passengers, friends, asked if we could go back and play
cards and maybe dance some more. He approved and did a loop,
cross-eyed, no hands. He shouted, "I want to play hearts!"
I continued to pay close attention to the dashboard.

last night, Lee (inthemindofme) came by where I'm "staying" and brought some cascarones (see Thursday, March 29th entry). She was a little confused... thought you threw the confetti eggs at the other person. after breaking one on her head and vice-versa, the proper "egg breaking etiquette" was explained through action. FUN, and thanks. Very nice/sweet of you.

"The Heartache Begins Early"

Thats the sports headline talking about last night's home opener loss by the Philadelphia Phillies. Strange, though they haven't won the series in about two decades(?) they (the headline writers) are already playing the malaise card. Jeez guys... ITS ONLY THE FIRST F***IN' GAME OF THE SEASON. GIVE IT A BREAK. (pls see footnote)

other topic: because a high percentage of persons who view this blog are teenagers
;-) thought I'd pass along this info/site (comps of spamalot)

footnote: wonder what the "accepted abbreviation" (so as not to totally offend) is.

Horoscope: Cancer (June 22-July 22) for April 1, 2007

Your ideas are the most interesting things to float by since the BBC aired a 1957 April Fool's hoax on trees that grow spaghetti. People are as curious about your ideas as they were about where to buy that tree.
