healthy plants:
when watering a direct-potted house plant, only pour enough water, starting at where the plant is rooted and slowly water in a circular fashion, wetting all of the topsoil until the water starts to seep out and accumulate in the dish the bowl is resting in. Stop watering and wait till no more water seeps into the dish. then fill the dish with water. using this method, will only have to water once every week or every two weeks. when deciding when to water again, pinch some soil (digging down an inch or so and retrieving a small amount). squeeze between fore-finger and thumb. if no moisture appears in the soil in your hand, water. if there is moisture, give the plant a water break. most plants die from *over-watering* not under-watering.

clandestine operations:
was told to go to this coffee shop but call first (had passed by the place before and probably purchased a cup or two previously) and tell them to save a copy of (deleted) magazine. If you just go in and ask for it (magazine), they will deny you.
anyway, happened to walk by, so went in and bought an espresso and asked for a business card. they didn't have any so I asked if they could write down the phone #. One employee didn't know it but the other did. Drank the coffee and asked for a copy of (deleted) mag. Cold shoulder. guess you really do need to call ahead and reserve.
impulse purchase (1/29): Fugazi - Furniture (ep) $3.99
also, thought it funny so started to tell record store owner about coffee shop/mag/phone reservation. Turns out the record store also carries the magazine.
addendum: ended up giving the magazine to the barkeep who added the Joos' song "Night People" to the jukebox at (bar name deleted).

visit an old school type old-man bar before it closes on Feb. 3:
Penn View Grill located on 13th/Race. Even has a large banner outside boldy stating "Cocktail Lounge". Will close cause the Convention Center is expanding. Been in business since 1976. Doesn't really seem that old, but that's a total of 31 years.
tiara sightings:
about an hour ago (1ish pm - eastern time) saw a girl/young woman (guesstimate age: 17-24) wearing a "crown"... thought that sorta funny/strange till remembering that Charles, the prince of Wales, and his wife, Camilla, the duchess of Cornwall, are in town for the weekend.
More pub/lounge info:
just had a pint at Las Vegas Lounge. when entering, the barkeep was playing Sonic Youth's "Teenage Riot". Not bad for an old man/mixed crowd type of place. Also their pints are larger than regular pints. They call 'em "royal pints" though I seriously doubt they accept Euro notes there. But why would they? American cash for tab/gratuity gladly accepted.

Man and Beast
The front page of today's (Jan. 26) free daily spotlights the homeless, and because of frigid temperatures, homeless advocates have been working overtime trying to get them off the streets and into shelters. A Code Blue warning has been issued meaning if a homeless person refuses to go into a shelter, the police can and will be called at the discretion of the homeless advocates. serious and deadly stuff. Code Blue warnings are issued by the city when windchills drop below 20 degrees. This past Fri. and Sat. Code Blues were also issued though it didn't make the front page.
Its been really good hunting for the three or four red-shouldered hawks (wingspan guesstimate - 2 1/2 ft) I see around the parks. In the past week I've seen two of them snagging and eating well-fed, fat city pigeons. The pigeons are moving slower and looking/working harder for their food because of the cold and sometimes just standing still on the grass trying to avoid the wind. Also, noticed a new hawk in the area. It was a red-tailed hawk (slightly smaller than the other type of hawks) and it was also eating/enjoying a pigeon.

Lady Obsessions and Lady Insultations
The word on the street was that
this particular lady was insane.
I thought to myself that just because her
shoes didn't match, one being a high top,
and the other a low cut, didn't necessarily
make her insane. The car that she would one
day own would have two different license plates.
Still, that didn't make her insane.
My neighbors said she was trying to
visually capture
every possible angle, of every object
in the world.
I had seen her on the streets once
or twice. Maybe it was three times,
I had been waiting to approach her.
It was on the weekend that
I finally did. I figured she'd be in
a good mood on the weekend.
I told her she'd be dead by the time she
achieved her goal,
and if she did, by miraculously living
forever, I asked, what would the real
accomplishment be? She was silent
until she spit straight up, I stepped back.
I asked her what she defined as an object.
She said, "anything that stands as
it's own, like lithium carbonate."
I asked her if each picture in a family
photo album was an object.
She said, "an eye on a face, in a picture,
in a family photo album, is an object."
I was confused. I asked her how
it would be possible to live this way without
trespassing. She said that she was like air,
and was welcome anywhere.
In the beginning of our conversation I had
a little bit of sympathy for this lady. Any
sorrow for her dissapated. She had that
pompous glow and the curled up
in the corner of the couch while everyone
else in the room is focused on the weather
channel look on her face, bored.
Like her hobbies were the secret to an
everlasting life, like a spoiled house cat,
with a special never heard before animal name.
I rolled my eyes and mentioned to her that
while we'd been talking, she hadn't looked
at my shoes.
She replied that she had and that they
were ugly. She said that she needed me to
turn ninety degrees, and then turn a little
more, and walk away
for her to feel complete.

weekend parking lot info for the Museum of Art*:
There are two parking lots. The larger of the two is located in a park near the main (southside) entrance. After parking your vehicle you then walk 235 paces (med. stride), cross 2 two-lane streets (39 paces), 84 paces to reach the steps (think Rocky, the movie), 104 paces upward (skipping every other step), cross a plaza/climb more steps (135 paces). You may now enter the museum. cost to park your car - $7
Northside parking lot near auxiliary/secondary entrance - from vehicle to Museum door... under 100 paces. cost to park your car - $5

"Enter into partnership with a buddy - all will go well."
"You might want to discuss something you feel is important in a relationship. Decide to approach the topic again, experiment with a different attitude. Be more in touch with postive feelings rather than anger. Tonight: see who offers what."
"Let me clarify your situation for you. Up until a short time ago, you'd been wandering through halls of mirrors, metaphorically speaking. Then you spied a hammer on the floor, got seized by a rash impulse and proceeded to smash lots of glass - again, metaphorically speaking. That was the first step to finding your way out of the labyrinth. Now you're ready for the next step: actually escaping. As you head out, I advise you to be careful that you don't cut yourself on all the shards. Liberation is near enough; there's no need to rush. Walk calmly and carefully towards the sound of the heartbeat you hear in the distance, metaphorically speaking."

Currently reading Dubliners by James Joyce
Also participate in a James Joyce book club that meets twice a month.
It used to be the James Joyce/Captain Beefheart Comparative Studies Society but the moderator dropped Beefheart because all we did was drink heavily and listen to music.
Best insight/point of departure into Joyce at the most recent meeting:
"My copy of 'Dubliners' (The Viking Portable Library, edited by Harry Levin) also contains an edited yet definitive version of 'Ulysses'. It only contains every 18th sentence of the book."
"Did you say 18 or 8?"
"18"
"Oh, I thought it was the Molly Bloom Soliloquy version. You know, another Joyce pun riffing on the eight lines."
"Actually I was joking. I just find it interesting that everbody is reading a different edition of 'Dubliners'."
There are five persons in the group with five different versions.
Note: Episode (chapter) 18 of 'Ulysses' is Penelope consisting of the soliloquy. Eight long sentences with the only puncutuation being the one period which ends the chapter and book.
Point, none. It's just fun getting together, drinking some alcohol, and discussing Joyce and his work.
