Art & Literature

Quick Picks:

No one belongs here more than you by Miranda July.

Award-winning filmmaker Miranda July's collection of short stories is quirky and candid. With the unique voice of an outsider, July constructs a narrative continuum of surreal romanticism throughout the pages of her literary debut. Making Love in 2003, previously featured in The Paris Review, proves July's sensitivity and authorial expertise with its intimate retelling of a fictional affair with the universe. Provocative and personal, Something That Needs Nothing, paints the tangled landscape of love and admiration and where it can lead. July's short stories are dazzling and familiar like the highs of false hope or the dull ache of self doubt. No one belongs here more than you is the perfect companion to July's film Me and You and Everyone We Know. Scribner, 2007. -Dianca Potts

I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence, by Amy Sedaris.

The arrival of noisy hordes of master chefs and subsequent conversion of all crooks and nannies into restaurateurs has led to a dearth of what was once a unique American staple, the guide to entertaining at home. More than a cookbook, somewhat less than a fire-code-safe crafts book, and holding its own as an etiquette book, Ms. Sedaris uses her years of home entertaining experience to recapture the lost arts of cheese balls, chintz, and the cha-cha, as she covers all manner of social occasion, including how to get guests to leave. From the intimate style of her writing it becomes clear quickly that Amy Sedaris does, very probably, like you, perhaps a little too much if you get claustrophobic easily. Her section on entertaining the elderly is extremely helpful, though the polite thing to do would be to laugh freely and pretend it is scandalously unfair. Lovingly illustrated, if you don't have time to read, with thoroughly dangerous woodworking instructions from Paul Dinello. Warner Books, 2006. - Walt Maguire

Another Bullshit Night in Suck City: a Memoir, by Nick Flynn.

Growing up with a hard-working single mother in the suburbs of Boston, Flynn, understandably, had no desire to become acquainted with his chronically drunk and delusional father. Then one day, his father showed up at the homeless shelter where Flynn worked and that began an unlikely saga of redemption for both men. Written beautifully in riffs and starts, scenes, and lists-a hybrid form with perfect pitch-this work allows us to discover, with the author, an unfolding relationship that defies the odds. winter exhibitions:

The Puppet Show
Walkthrough with curators Carin Kuoni and Ingrid Schaffner, and artist Terence Gower

"The Puppet Show" is a group exhibition that looks at the imagery of puppets in contemporary art. Concentrating on sculpture, video and photography, some of the works involve actual puppets and artists as puppeteers. Other images evoke topics associated with puppetry. Collectively these works show puppets to be a provocative and relevant imageryone that moves deep into social, political and psychological terrains. The installation is designed by artist Terence Gower with reference to the uncanny and theatrical displacements of scale. "The Puppet Show" premiers at ICA before traveling to Santa Monica, Honolulu, Houston, and Seattle.

Trisha Donnelly
Walkthrough with artist Trisha Donnelly and curator Jenelle Porter

Using sculpture, drawing, photographs, text, sound, video, and painting, Trisha Donnelly will compose an installation, her first U.S. solo museum exhibition, from works originally made between 1998 and 2007. Donnelly's ineffable body of work resists simple characterization. A lexicon of imagery and action relies on the power of suggestion. What unite her work in various media are gestures of altered time, shifters, dimensional explorations, evocation, perception, and belief structures. On display for an extended period through August 3, the show will transform with works rotating on and off display.

Carlos Motta: The Good Life
Walkthrough with artist Carlos Motta and curator Stamatina Gregory

"The Good Life," a long-term, in-progress, experimental documentary project, is a relevant examination of the regional history, perception and effects of U.S. interventionist policies in Latin America, at a time of global critical awareness of those politics. In this iteration, created for the Project Space, Motta's interviews with persons in Bogotá, Buenos Aires, Managua, Mexico City, Santiago and Tegucigalpa serve as both a conceptual and formal framework.

Ramp Project: Beyond Kiosk
Walkthrough with Christoph Keller and Conny Purtill

Over six-hundred independent publication projects turn the transitional space of ICA's ramp into a volume of volumes. Viewers are encouraged to pull material and peruse it along the way—picture the book stalls of Paris—or stop and read in the window seat and lounge staged half-way up the ramp. Selected by Christoph Keller, in an installation designed by Conny Purtill, the exhibition takes an exemplary swath from the Kiosk archive which Keller founded in 2001. Included are selections from Philadelphia's strong community of independent publishers.

someone's overheard conversation regarding jdate:

We squeezed into our table, and almost immediately noticed that the couple to my left was speaking about their JDate experiences.

I do not believe this couple was an actual couple, or that they were even on a date, because the guy spoke freely and unapologetically about using Jdate as a source of one-time hookups. The girl agreed that if she were going on a Jdate just for fun, she would sleep with the guy on the first date, but if she really liked him, she would wait. The guys said, "I haven't meant anyone on Jdate I liked enough for that. For me, it's just a one-night-stand thing."

Then he started complaining how many of the girls he had met and slept with through Jdate tried contacting him for future dates, and this annoyed him. He complained that many of the girls he meant through Jdate had curly hair. He hated curly hair. One time, he dated a girl with what he described as "natural" hair. He liked her. They went on a few dates, but then he found out she really had curly hair but had been blowing it out straight. This horrified him, and they broke up. "And I hate a girls who wear makeup."

"A lot of girls wear makeup," the girl said. "It's not that big a deal. I'm wearing makeup right now."

"Yeah, but you're hardly wearing any makeup."

"No, I'm wearing a nice amount of makeup. I would say I'm definitely wearing makeup, and it's a nice amount of makeup."

"Well, I didn't notice. I don't like it when you notice that a girl is wearing makeup. Or that she blow dries her hair. You don't blow dry your hair, do you?"

"I blow dry my hair."

"But you don't blow dry it all the time."

"I pretty much blow dry it all the time."

"But you don't blow dry it straight do you? Your hair is naturally straight."

"My hair is a little wavy. It's not curly. But I definitely blow dry it. And when I do, I blow dry it out straight."

After hitting this rough patch, they began to talk about past relationships. Brian and I sat mesmerized by the conversation, unable to talk, unable to do anything else but listen. And occasionally text each other about the horror we were feeling.

It turns out the girl had been married before, but was now single. The guy's longest relationship had gone on for two years, and this is with a girl who was ten years her junior. I started to do the math, but the girl made things easy. She said, "Well, you're 38 now. Things have changed a lot for you."

The guy spoke equivocally about his ex-girlfriend. He said, "She was very immature."

The girl said, "You mean she was socially awkward?"

"No. She was very socially tuned-in. She was very savvy. She just didn't know a lot."

"You mean she wasn't very bright?"

"No, she was brilliant. And very savvy."

"Did she not dress well?"

"No. She dressed amazing. It's just that she didn't know anything. She knew some things. But there were other things that she just didn't know. And it was always irritating."

Just then a new song came on. Brian leaned in and whispered to me that it was a band we liked — the Silver Jews. Ten seconds later, the guy said, "Hear this song?" He pointed up. "What band is this?"

The girl looked at him blankly. "It's a band called the Silver Jews. She would have know that."

The girl said, "I've never heard of them. I know classic rock. Ask me anything about classic rock. I'll be able to answer you. I'm an expert on Classic Rock. Pink Floyd. Led Zeppelin...."

They talked about Zeppelin 4 for a bit, but then were back to JDating, which is when I heard about one of the weirdest dating hang-ups ever. The guy said, "I went on two dates with her, and I like her, but I don't think we can go out again."

The girl said, "What's the problem? Is she too clingy?"

He said, "Not really. It's just that ... she told me that every Sunday she does philanthropy."

"Wha?

"You know. She does things for charities. Every Sunday."

"I think that's nice."

"It may be nice, but don't tell me about it."

"Why not?"

"It's not sexy. I can't think of anything less sexy than doing community service."

"I think it's nice that she spends her Sundays doing community service."

"I don't care that she does it. She just shouldn't tell anyone. I mean, not on a date. That's so unsexy. Community service is NOT SEXY. I don't think I can date her again."

"I'd love it if I guy I was dating did community service."

"I can't ever see her again. It's just too gross 'I do community service.' Gross."

After we left the restaurant, I had the desire to alert JDate that we had met their biggest douche bag.

Art Obsessions

For artists to obsess about their art is desirable but also troubling. To obsess is to feeled pulled about by one's thoughts, agitated, distracted, and separated from other life matters of vital importance. To obsess too virulently is to walk alone in anxiety. But to obsess too little is to wall oneself off from one's own creativity. Maintaining awareness of this distinction is an artist's everlasting duty. Artists must obsess, but they must also manufacture their own shutdown systems, their own ways of giving the brain a rest.

"The ideas for stories that thronged my brain would not let me rest till I had got rid of them by writing them." W. Somerset Maugham

"I wear myself out trying to render the orange trees so that they're not stiff but like those I saw by Botticelli in Florence. It's a dream that won't come true." Berthe Morisot

"The cypresses are always occupying my thoughts." Vincent van Gogh

"Wherever I go, I collect sand." Connie Zehr

"A mind too active is no mind at all." Theodore Roethke

For Art to come into existence, it must be obsessed about. Therefore I must cultivate a positive obsessiveness. But obsession is a dangerous neccessity. I will monitor my obsessiveness and strive to manage my anxieties: I want to obsess because I am working deeply, not because I am worrying myself to death.

personal thoughts on drawing the figure:

Usually during the process, if I got confused as to what was the real thing, the drawing or the nude model, it would be a very good drawing.

Public Art

There was a time when public art meant a bronzed war hero on the plaza. Today it means something radically different. Today it is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the living and the dead face-to-face for all eternity. Now it is ceremonial art, collective art, political art, environmental art. It is new-genre public art, the artist as aesthetician and activist, exploring his or her aliveness in the streets of the community.

"We are living in a state of emergency. I feel more than ever we must step outside of the strictly art arena. It is not enough to make art."

--Guillermo Gomez-Pena

"Unlike much of what has prviously been called public art, new genre-public art is based on engagement."

--Suzanne Lacy

"To search for the good and make it matter; this is the real challenge for the artist."

--Estella Conwill Majozo

"The work of art is a scream of freedom."

--Christo

I am both a private and public artist. I may not build monumental sculptures or transform the landscape, but I mean to live a less secretive and secluded life as an artist. If I am not precisely an activist, I am nevertheless an artist willing to be public, visible, and influential.

Letter To The Editor

To The Editor,

re: The American Debate | Getting white men to jump (editorial published Sunday, October 28, 2007)

The reason I will not vote for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton for President (Democrat Primary) is because, I believe, she is basically a dishonest person. Given a choice between her and a Republican candidate though, I will reluctantly choose her since I also believe the Republican party platform is even more dishonest.

Sincerely,

(Name Withheld)

recipe: Beef and Bean Chimichangas

Ingredients:

1. 1 pound lean ground beef
2. 3/4 cup chopped onion
3. 3/4 cup diced green bell pepper
4. 1 1/2 cups whole kernel corn
5. 2 cups taco sauce
6. 2 teaspoons chili powder
7. 1 teaspoon garlic salt
8. 1 teaspoon ground cumin
9. 1 (16 ounce) can refried beans
10. 8 (12 inch) flour tortillas
11. 1 (16 ounce) package shredded Monterey Jack cheese
12. 1 tablespoon butter, melted
13. shredded lettuce
14. 1 tomato, diced

Cooking Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

2. Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat. Drain excess grease, and add the onion, bell pepper, and corn. Cook for about 5 more minutes, or until vegetables are tender. Stir in the taco sauce, and season with chili powder, garlic salt and cumin, stirring until blended. Cook until heated through, then remove from heat, and set aside.

3. Open the can of beans, and spread a thin layer of beans onto each of the tortillas. Spoon the beef mixture down the center, and then top with as much shredded cheese as you like. Roll up the tortillas, and place them seam-side down onto a baking sheet. Brush the tortillas with melted butter.

4. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden brown. Serve with lettuce and tomato.

Quickpicks: Great Reads

Fiasco, by Thomas E. Ricks. A Washington Post reporter details the incredible series of missteps that led to the war in Iraq, and then to the mismanagement of the occupation. The theme that emerges is the frustrating and astounding failure to learn from mistakes; the same poor management issues crop up over and over again, angering both the Iraqis and seasoned American military men while the top civilians in Washington (and you know who you are) stay the course. At this point, there isn't much new information revealed, but seeing all the details laid out dovetailed chronologically brings home the scale of the fiasco, and the thin likelihood that anyone presently in charge has the skill to turn things around, if indeed anyone could this far down the road. Penguin Press, 2006. - Walt Maguire

The Poetry Home Repair Manual, by Ted Kooser. Ted Kooser was our first Midwestern US Poet Laureate (2004-2006). Listen to him: the adjective is not enemy to the noun, but its servant. Nouns inspire associations, so that one adjective limits the reader's options. Many American poets write in first person and in present tense but Kooser advises otherwise. Watch the ends of your lines, how you go off into space. Cute won't do - meaning is preferable. Pack a lot into your title and concentrate on the poem. Buy this book and use it with a Poetry Handbook by either Babette Deutsch (1982) or Mary Oliver (1994). You'll then have a complete home poetry workshop. Bison Books, 2007. -Jay C. Rochelle

The Species Crown, by Curtis Smith. Smith's novella and collection of short stories has an intimate feel, often as if the narrator is whispering his tale directly into your ear. This effect derives in part from Smith's penchant for using the second person; the direct "you" technique has a way of getting close to the skin and making one squirm, both in pleasure and discomfort, as the stories unfold. At the same time, each piece resonates with dark humor, keen intelligence and startling imagery that will keep you moving from story to story without pause. Press 53, 2007. - Aimee LaBrie

Possible Side Effects, by Augusten Burroughs. Possible Side Effects of reading Augusten Burroughs new paperback with the same title will include uncontrollable laughter and some very embarrassing snorts. Burroughs has once again allowed the general masses into his life and we are thankful. In this montage book, he recalls visiting his grandmothers in the South. His one grandmother teaches him the ways of the tooth fairy, fashionable clothing, and manners while the other teaches him the gentle art of revenge. St. Martin's Press, 2006.- Michelle Whittle

FLEISHER/OLLMAN GALLERY WINTER INVITATIONAL

2007 marks the fifth anniversary of Fleisher/Ollman Gallery's annual Winter invitational of young Philadelphia artists. Curators Claire Iltis, William Pym and Heather Shoemaker seek submissions for this year's installment. The show will open December 14th and run through January 2008.

The young art and gallery landscape has transformed itself many times in the last 5 years, but the F/O Winter Invitational remains an original and a constant: professional, broadly seen and discussed, unbiased, unfazed by hype, gossip or fashion.

Former participants have gone on to show at White Columns, Andrea Rosen Gallery, Scope Miami, Art 36 Basel, the Frieze Art Fair, Moore College of Art, Bellwether Gallery, NADA Art Fair, Harvard University Art Galleries, ICA Philadelphia, and the Fleisher/Ollman Gallery. This is a proven opportunity for young un- and under-represented artists to dramatically raise their profile in the city and international art world at large.

Artists interested in submission must meet the following criteria:

* Must currently reside in the Greater Philadelphia area.
* No official commercial gallery representation in the Greater Philadelphia area.
* All submitted work must have been made in the last 18 months.
* While anyone is encouraged to submit, be advised that the focus of this exhibition is on young, emerging artists.
* Currently enrolled students are ineligible.
* Work must be submitted in the form of 8-10 slides or digital images. Absolutely no physical work will be accepted at the gallery; no studio visits will be made in the first round of selection. Websites will not be accepted; if the piece is a website, submit it on a CD.
* No restrictions on media, scale or subject matter.
* Resume or curriculum vitae required, artist statement not required.
* Only submissions accompanied by an SASE will be returned.

NB - If you have submitted to the exhibition before, you are more than welcome to submit again. Rejection in previous years does not have any bearing on this year's jury.

All work must be submitted by mail or in person by 5pm, Monday, November 5th.

The Fleisher/Ollman Gallery is located at:
1616 Walnut Street, Suite 100
Philadelphia, PA 19103

Just Trust

When we start to worry and we think we just must,
There is another choice we can make.
We can learn to JUST TRUST.

When we hang on to our fears and deny our tears,
We can try letting go and look for courage within
and JUST TRUST.

When we feel weary and try to control,
There is a motto we might extol:
JUST TRUST.

If we've made a connection to a Higher Power,
There's no need to feel worried or fussed
(unless we want to).
The healthier choice is ours to make.
We can make a decision to JUST TRUST.

Online Action Center
Send Urgent UN mission to Myanmar (Burma)

"Ask President Bush to urge the UN Security Council members, especially the Permanent members like China, to immediately deploy a UN Security Council mission to Myanmar (Burma). This mission should act to resolve the human rights crisis and avert the risk of further violence and bloodshed. The Council should also consider the possibility of imposing an arms embargo and to address the dire human rights situation in Myanmar. The peaceful mass demonstrations taking place compare in scale to those in 1988, when security forces broke up massive pro-democracy demonstrations with deadly violence, killing thousands."

Poetry Plus Excerpt:

Fire and Ice

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
